With Christmas fast approaching, it’s time once again to start organising our festive calendars and book some seasonal cheer. Gateshead has much to offer this winter both for locals and visitors to the region. Indeed, if you’ve just bought a new home in Gateshead, attending some Christmas celebrations can be an excellent way to acquaint oneself the area and local community.

Gateshead Indoor Winter Market, 6 November 2022

This annual event is back again with more festive inspiration. It will be held in one of Gateshead’s most famous and well-loved venues, The Fed (formerly The Lancastrian Suite) in Dunstan NE11 9JR. The event runs from 11am until 4pm leaving plenty of time to browse the 70 plus stall holders who will be showcasing some of the North East’s finest crafts, food and makers. The event is free and promises to offer lots of creative present ideas whilst entertaining everyone with live music.

Gateshead Christmas Light Switch on, 17 November 2022

Taking place in Trinity Square, the Christmas Light Switch on is a great way to come together and celebrate the season. The event takes place 4pm – 6.30pm.

Fused Glass Christmas Decoration making, 26 November 2022

To create a unique and personalised present or simply to try something new, this glass decoration making class provides a wonderful opportunity. Hosted by the Shipley Art Gallery, between 10.30am and 1pm, participants will join a skilled tutor to create some beautiful decorations using a range of materials. The creations will then be fired and collected at a later point in time for Christmas. The event is both suitable for novices and those more experienced in glass making.

Christmas Dog Party, 3 and 4 December 2022

This is a must for all dog-owners and ensures their pooches are catered for this Christmas. Back by popular demand, the Watergate Café is hosting another Christmas Dog Party which it claims will be even better than last year. Christmas jumpers for owners and pets alike are strongly encouraged with lots of treats for both animals and humans. Father Christmas will be appearing and with the attendance of Newcastle and Gateshead Photography Services, it means every dog’s meet with Santa can be pictured. Tickets are £12.50 which includes a present for each dog.

St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival, 6 – 22 December 2022

For a real community festive event, St Mary’s Heritage Centre will be displaying a number of Christmas trees which have been decorated by local organisations, community groups and artists. The event is in collaboration with the Emerald Explorer’s Project and is open to the public, for free, from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. The event is a great way to appreciate and support the role of art in the community and also to get into festive gear.

Big Festive Family Gig, 10 and 11 December 2022

For family musical fun, look no further than the Big Festive Family Gig hosted by Sage Gateshead. This event is aimed at 0 – 7 aged children, though older siblings are also welcomed and costs £4.50 a ticket. This now permanent fixture in the Sage’s festive calendar proves great fun for children and adults alike as they are entertained by all the Christmas classics.
